Self-massage (Abhyanga) is a great when the weather gets colder and skin gets drier. It helps keep things circulating, improves skin texture and elasticity, and strengthens bodily tissues and joints. For me to make massage part of my routine, I switched my mindset from thinking of it as a special treat to part of my self-maintenance. It was a game changer for me when I started making my own rather than going the Sephora route: the price goes way down so I can do it on the daily (or weekly) rather than a precious glass bottle that mainly stays on my counter in a decorative capacity.

It’s as simple as picking an oil (if it’s your first time, sesame, coconut or sweet almond oil are user friendly and pretty neutral smelling.) If you feel fancy, add some essential oil to it. If you feel super fancy, make your own body butter—recipe below.

  • 1/2 C shea or cocoa butter

  • 1/8 C jojoba

  • 1/2 C coconut or avocado oil

  • optional: 2 oz rose tea (I used to get my dried rose buds from the Hong Kong Supermarket on Mott St, now I use the Asian Super Market on Pleasantburg. So basically I’m saying support local.)

  • optional: 20 drops essential oil (for vata season I like a combination of bergamot, frankincense & cedarwood)

-- Combine the oils in a double boiler. What’s that? I don’t have one either. So put the oils in a heatproof bowl, and put that bowl in a medium sized pot half filled with water. Put that bowl on your stove and turn on the stove. That’s your double boiler.

-- Add the rose tea SLOWLY (like drop by drop if you can) to the oils.

-- When everything is combined, put the mixture in the fridge (or freezer) until it comes to a waxy, solid consistency.

-- Add the essential oils, and use an electric whisk, a food processor with a whisk attachment or your KitchenAid.

-- Takes about 5 minutes to get fluffy. Store it in a glass container, and it’ll keep around 3 months.
